Tetris Effect: Connected is perhaps the best Tetris will ever be

The vanilla version of Tetris Effect has been out for some time and has since then gathered some digital dust in our game libraries. Just last year, it received the massive Connected update which gave the game an entire multiplayer mode. That update was a Microsoft Store exclusive for a bit under a year until it was brought over to PlayStation consoles and PC platforms recently.

Tetris Effect: Connected includes many of the recent additions to the core game that have been introduced over the decades, such as the ability to hold a piece in reserve and the power to spin a piece before it fully locks into place. However, the 'Zone' feature – which is entirely new for this entry – really makes the most impact.

Connected is perhaps the most interesting of all of Tetris Effect: Connected‘s multiplayer modes, and if you’re anything like me it’s where you’ll end up gravitating towards every time you play. With two other players, you’ll each have your own space to play in; like normal, you’ll simply be trying to clear lines. Occasionally you’ll be attacked by the ‘boss’, who’ll either litter your screen with a few rogue blocks or perform another attack, like dropping an oversized tetromino. But, every so often, all three players’ spaces will combine, making one giant Tetris playing field. You’ll have to work together to clear as many lines as possible with the other players. When you’re in a game where everyone flawlessly works together, it feels magical.

Other than that, there is a selection of 15 different Effect modes, consisting of some Tetris classics like the 150-Line clear Marathon mode, the 3-minute Ultra mode, and the 40-Line clear Sprint mode. Other modes include a relaxing, ambient classic playlists, specific gimmick modes where you have to perform all-clears, high combos, and clearing target blocks.

The game is divided into various modes, of which 'Journey' is the one you'll be spending the most time with, at least initially. This is the game's solo campaign mode and sees you moving through a series of stages by clearing a set number of lines. It's an engaging and often emotional trip, thanks largely to the aforementioned way in which the game marries light and sound, but you'll finish it on the default difficulty setting in the space of a day. There's replayability here, of course, but the game's other modes help extend longevity massively.

Tetris Effect: Connected is perhaps the best Tetris will ever be. If you enjoy the classic block puzzle game and like the idea of playing to a backdrop of beautiful audio and visuals, then you’ll absolutely love it. With a huge amount of content, including a truly original multiplayer mode, this really is an incredible game – and it feels right at home in a handheld format. Sorry Tetris 99, you’re not the Switch’s best Tetris game anymore.
